Mood- the overall mood of the story was very refined as the lifestyles of these people were VERY different to what was
actually happening at the time in Ireland. The mood gave the atmosphere of a very sophisticated lifestyle and
characters. The fact that the setting is based on places where only rich people go to depicts this fact of sophistication.
The description of the charatcers show us that these people are very 'clean cut' and at that time, looking clean meant
you were exposed to the riches of life and didnt expierence poverty.
Tone- The tone of the story was actually very slow and elegant as the story progressed, the tone became very
rambunctious and messy. In the beginning we see merriment in an orderly manner while they were in the car. This then
continued throughout dinner as we still see them to having refined fun. The tone at the end signifies regret for example "He leaned his elbows on the table and and rested his head between his hands, counting the beats of his temples."
I think the tone and mood are evident due to the epiphany that the protaganist "Jimmy" expierenced thus leading to the atosphere which Joyce portrays in many of his stories; paralysis. It gives the reader an understanding of the characters feelings and Joyce's thoughts where all Irish are stuck in this life and there is no way out of it.
